In 2011, to mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the original publication of Strangers in the Land: The Ukrainian Presence in Cape Breton by John Huk, a member of the Ukrainian community in Whitney Pier, Nova Scotia, The Centre for Cape Breton Studies republished the volume, with book design, selected editing and illustration by The Word & Image Studio, incorporating expanded appendices and writings by researcher Dr. Marcia Ostashewski.
“As book designer and editor, Darene Roma Yavorsky of The Word & Image Studio has [given] close attention to the original material, to the new material added in appendices and the introduction. She also created the original map that appears in the introduction to this volume, adding to and contextualizing the valuable material of the original publication. Her thoughtful treatment of the material has helped to maintain respect for the primary document at the same time as working to update the presentation, ensuring this publication meets the needs of the various partners in its production and, most of all, the author. (Her involvement in this project is significant for its connections to her own family history and that of Whitney Pier: it was her father, Saskatchewan-born Pavlo Romanovich Yavorsky, who came to the area in 1939 and taught Ukrainian stage dance to the children — John Huk among them.) Darene’s dedication and contributions to this and several other research-related projects with Cape Breton’s Ukrainians are unparalleled…” ~ Dr. Marcia Ostashewski
